There are two versions of this call and they are not the same problem. The evening one is the familiar kind: you are home, the door has shut behind you, and the cost is an uncomfortable hour on your own step. The morning one is the version this town actually produces. It is twenty to five, the crew leaves at five, or the site opens at seven, or the traffic on the 101 turns from forty minutes into ninety at six o'clock. The door is the same door. What it costs you is completely different.

That difference is why the early window between four and seven in the morning carries $40 on this site, exactly what an evening job carries, and less than the $70 an overnight job carries. It would be easy to price five in the morning as a panic call. In a town where the fields, the sheds and the commute all start in the dark, that would mean charging the working half of the population extra for being awake, which is not a business we want.

Opening is done cold, with the tools chosen once the technician can see what is genuinely in the door. Builder hardware from the eighties and nineties on the northern streets usually gives up quickly. Pre-war knob sets and mortise cases on the east side take longer and are no more trouble at the end of it. Patio sliders are handled at the latch and never at the panel, because a slider that has been levered never runs true again. If a lock refuses every non-destructive route, that gets said out loud and drilling becomes your decision, and agreeing to it does not move the number you were quoted.

One boundary, stated here because it comes up most on this page. We are locksmiths: locks, cylinders, deadbolts, keypads, keys, gates and the doors those things hang in. Garage door springs, panels, cables and opener motors are a different trade. When the overhead door itself has failed mechanically you hear that in the first minute and you get into the house another way — the service door at the side, the front door, a slider — so you are standing in your own kitchen when you make the second call in daylight.

The visit runs $119 to $209 and the $89 service call is inside that number rather than added underneath it. Ordinary hardware, one exterior door, daylight: $119. It climbs toward $209 with a second locked door behind the first, a high-security cylinder, a keypad bolt that has to come apart, or a broken key extracted from the keyway. Between four and seven in the morning the plain door is $159; between eight and midnight it is also $159; between midnight and four it is $189. That arithmetic happens before you hear a figure, so nothing is added while you stand outside.
